Abstract
The melting of boric acid, borax, or phosphates is carried out without swelling by admixing with the substance to be melted 10 to 20 per cent by weight of an indifferent material that remains solid during the treatment. Coarsely ground small pieces of coke, retort carbon, or charcoal may be used. Examples relate to the fusion and dehydration of boric acid, and to the melting of sodium ammonum phosphate and disodium phosphate. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the application of the process of the invention to any substance which swells on heating or fusing. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
