Abstract

481,206. Sizing paper. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Oct. 7, 1936, Nos. 27254 and 30505. [Class 96] Paper is sized in the pulp by the use of watersoluble polymeric amides of the acrylic acid series in addition to resin and/or wax. Suitable amides are polymeric acrylic acid amide, alpha-methyl-acrylic acid and its homologues and polymerization products derived from the monomeric amides and other compounds capable of being polymerized under the same conditions. The use of these substances enables the proportion of normal sizing agents to be reduced. Examples are given of the use of polymeric acrylic acid amide with (1) oxidized montan wax and aluminium sulphate ; (2) colophony and aluminium sulphate ; and (3) colophony, sodium carbonate, and aluminium sulphate. In an example in the second Provisional Specification, hydrogenated montan wax is used.
