Abstract

481,030. Hose &c. reels. PILLIN, J. B. Sept. 7, 1936, No. 24384. [Class 99 (ii)] In a self-coiling reel for hose pipes, cables, &c. of the kind in which the reel is controlled by a clockspring and is provided with pawl and ratchet mechanism to prevent rotation of the reel when the required length of hose has been paid out, the counterweighted pawl 20 is connected by a chain 36 to one arm 33 of a bell-crank lever the other arm 34 of which is fitted with a spring-pressed leather pad 37 for frictional contact with a side plate 1 of said reel. The Figure shows the reel after drawing off a length of hose therefrom. When it is desired to recoil the hose, a further short length of hose is drawn off the reel so as to rotate the reel in the direction of the arrow and locate the pawl about two-thirds of the way along the next succeeding tooth of the ratchet 19, whereupon the hose is released. This permits the clockspring, not shown, to commence rotating the reel in a clockwise direction, and at the same time the arm 34 of the bell-crank lever is constrained by the friction pad 37 to follow the reel, thus raising the crank arm 33 and consequently disengaging the pawl from the ratchet and permitting continued rotation of the reel. When the free end of the hose approaches the reel the movement of the hose is checked, and a slight pull on the hose will suffice to move the reel and crank arm 34 sufficiently anticlockwise to slacken the chain 36 and effect re-engagement of the pawl and ratchet.
