[Class 29] An auxiliary cooling compartment 17 is arranged below the lower edge of the door opening of the main storage compartment cooled by the usual cooling element 15 of refrigerating apparatus 10 arranged at the back of the cabinet, and is cooled by waste cold partly by heat exchange through fins 21 on the lower side of a loose metal cover member 20 and partly by the descent of cold air into it through perforations 26 in the front part of the cover member. The cover remains in place normally when the. cabinet door is opened, and may be slid outwards on ledges 23 to give access to bottles or other goods 19, which may be supported on a grating 18 above. a drain 25 for moisture. The temperature in the auxiliary compartment is slightly above that of the main chamber and preferably never falls below 0‹ C. The refrigerating apparatus is of the absorption type and a compartment is provided at the side of the auxiliary cooling compartment for a liquid fuel burner, even when the apparatus is adapted alternatively for gas or electric heating. The cover member may be a member without fins and withdrawable through a slot below the cabinet door so as to serve as an external shelf. In a modification, the auxiliary compartment is in the form of a sliding drawer with an insulated front wall, and a spring or weight may be used to return the drawer to its place. A porous plate to absorb water; for example from the defrosting of the cooling element, may be arranged in the auxiliary compartment to maintain it more humid than the main chamber.
