Abstract
Magnesium oxychlorides are obtained by slowly heating an intimate mixture of pulverized magnesia and ground solid hydrates of magnesium chloride to about the temperature of fusion of the hydrate concerned. The magnesia may be wholly or partly replaced by magnesium hydroxide or by a magnesium oxychloride still capable of taking up magnesium chloride. The reaction may be carried out in a rotary tube furnace through which the pulverulent mixture passes in countercurrent to the heating gases, a reaction temperature of 130-150 DEG C. being suitable when MgCl26H2O is used. When, however, lower hydrates are used with consequent increase of the reaction temperature, an externally heated closed rotary tube furnace is preferably employed. The product, which has the form of a powder, may be moistened with water or a magnesium chloride solution and pressed into shaped bodies, or shaped bodies may be formed from the magnesia and magnesium chloride and these be subjected to the heat treatment, preferably without movement of the same. Examples are given.
