Abstract
480,334. Electrolytic production of hyposulphites. CARPMAEL, A. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Aug. 20, 1936, No. 22952. [Class 41] In a process for the production of watersoluble hyposulphites by electrolytic reduction of bisulphites, a current concentration of more than 2 amperes per 100 cc. of catholyte is used, while during the electrolysis the pH value of the catholyte is measured and maintained between 4À0 and 6À5, preferably between 4À5 and 6À0. The process may be carried out at temperatures above 15‹ C., preferably between 25 and 50‹ C. In examples, sodium hyposulphite is manufactured in an electrolytic cell divided into anode and cathode chambers by a porous rubber diaphragm, the anode comprising a lead plate and the cathode a silver wire net. During the electrolysis, the anolyte, consisting of sodium stilphite solution, and the catholyte, consisting of sodium bisulphite solution, are passed continuously through the cell, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, or nitrogen mixed with sulphur dioxide to maintain the desired pH value, being introduced into the cathode chamber from below, for stirring the catholyte.
