Abstract

480,129. Composite wood boards. PFOHL, F. Nov. 20, 1936, No. 31876. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1935. [Class 145 (ii)] A composite wood sheet is formed from three layers of wood strips, those in the inner layer being coarser than those in the outer layers, the strips being moistened with adhesive and formed into a pile in which they lie crisscross on one another but substantially parallel to the surface of the sheet to be formed, and the pile being then compressed to form the sheet. The adhesive may be size, casein, albumin, artificial resin glues, or the like, and excess may be removed from the strips prior to pressing, for example by centrifugal action. The strips are dropped into a casing in the press and allowed to remain in the criss-cross positions in which they fall, the height of the stacked layer being about six times the thickness of the sheet desired. The pile is then compressed, at atmospheric or higher temperatures according to the adhesive employed. The outer layers may be formed from strips 50 mm. long, 4 mm. wide, and 0À5 mm. thick, and the inner layer from strips 100 mm. long, 6 mm. wide, and 1 mm. thick. If a very smooth surface is desired, the sheet may be faced with a coating of very thin strips, compressed together with the other layers, and may then without further treatment be veneered.
