480,048. Stapling hand -, tools. HOTCHKISS CO., E. H. Jan. 29, 1937, No. 2651. Convention date, Feb. 15, 1936. [Class 89 (iii)] A tool for . driving staples in difficultlyaccessible places comprises a casing having a hand-grip portion 12 and an elongated head portion 11 with a flat extension 27. The portion 11 houses a guide 13 along which a strip of staples 14 is fed, by a spring pusher 15, with the staple legs horizontal, a driver 21 with a head 23, and a slide 19 and spring- pressed block 31 which co-operate to arrange the lowest staple in the driver passage with its legs vertical. The lowest staple rests normally with its cross-bar on a shoulder 35 of the block 31. When the driver 21 is raised, the block moves forward to position the crossbar in the driver passage. The slide 19 is then lowered, so that its curved lower end walls turn the staple legs to a vertical position, and then force the block 31 out of the driver passage. The casing portion 12 houses 'the means for operating the driver and slide. When the hand-lever 37 is raised, its arm 60 first engages a dog 52 to rock a lever 46 and so compress a spring 57. The ends 48 of the lever 46 engage in slots 49 in the driver head 23, so that the driver is raised. At a certain point, the lever 46 is latched by a pawl 66 engaging in a notch 51, and extensions 40 ori the hand lever 37 engage notches 41 in the slide 19 so as to lower the latter for turning the staple legs vertical. Finally, the arm 60 disengages the pawl 66 from the notch 51, thus allowing the spring 57 to expand and impart its driving stroke to the driver. Two modified arrangements of the operating levers on the casing portion 12 are described.
