Abstract

479,721. Coating metal by extrusion. REID, J. S. April 27, 1937, No. 11999. [Class 87 (ii)] Metal, preferably in the form of long strips, is coated with a plastic composition such as rubber by heating the metal, subjecting it to a vacuum to remove air &c., cooling it while still being subjected to vacuum, and applying hot plastic composition to the cooled metal without exposing it to the atmosphere. A strip of steel 1 is drawn from a reel 2 through a cleaning tank 4 in which it is submitted to the vapours of a heated cleansing agent 5 such as hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. Dirt and condensed vapours fall into the compartment 8. The strip passes through a sealed chamber 9 which is evacuated by a, pump 10, the strip being heated by an electric resistor- 96 to a temperature below its recalescence point. The strip then passes through a tube 12 provided with cooling fins into a chamber 13 which is cooled by a refrigerator 15, preferably to about 0‹ C. The tube 12 and chamber 13 are kept exhausted by the pump 10. The strip finally passes through a die 23 where it is coated with plastic rubber supplied by a worm 25. The rubber is then vulcanized. Other plastic material such as guttapercha, ozokerite, or bituminous material may be similarly applied.
