Abstract
478,994. Modulating systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 28, 1937, No. 14851. Convention date, July 7, 1936. [Class 40 (v)] In a suppressed carrier modulator of the type employing a Wheatstone-bridge network of non-linear resistances, in which a resistance 33, in series with the non-linear resistance in one or more arms of the bridge is employed to improve the balance, a variable resistance 34 is connected across the non-linear element 32 to produce more complete suppression of the carrier. Modulation source 13 and the output circuit 14 are connected across one diagonal of the bridge 10, and the carrier from source 15 is supplied to the other diagonal. With no signal applied, the resistance 33 is adjusted to balance the bridge with current flowing in the conductive direction, and the resistance 34 for current flowing in the nonconductive direction. The resistances 33, 34 may be associated with other arms of the bridge, or they may be jointly associated with the same arm of the network. In another modification the resistance 33 comprises a potentiometer, one of the carrier supply terminals being to the slider.
