Abstract

478,672. Tobacco pipes. BRENNINGER, A. W. July 23, 1936, No. 20452. [Class 130] In a pipe having a longitudinal ventilation slot 11 in the stem 6 to enable it to be readily cleaned and dried, the mouthpiece is provided with a bar or finger 21 for closing the slot and with a tubular member 9 insertable in the smoke passage 7 to seal it from the slot. As shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the tube 9 is threaded at 16 in the mouthpiece and internally bevelled at the forward end 9a to fit a corresponding seating in the stem, and has in its under side a slot 14 in which nicotine &c. may condense. The forward edge 15 of the slot is shaped to clean the bore of the stem when the tube 9 is withdrawn. The bar 21 is formed integral with a disc 20 freely rotatable on the tube 9, and slides between shoulders 22 on the stem. Index marks on the disc 20 and the mouthpiece are in register when the slot 14 in the tube 9 is in its normal bottom position. In a modification, Fig. 9, the stem 6 has a reduced outer end on which is mounted a metal reinforcing sleeve 28 formed with a groove 29 aligned with the slot 26 to receive the bar 21.
