Abstract

A process of polishing a formaldehyde resin, or an article made therefrom, comprises subjection the resin to the action of an aqueous hypochlorite solution which is alkaline. Phenolformaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde and thiourea-formaldehyde resins are mentioned, and suitable specified hypochlorites are those of sodium, potassium and calcium. The solution is preferably used at an elevated temperature, e.g. above 75 DEG C., and a solution containing about 4 per cent hypochlorite and 0,3 per cent to 1 per cent of free alkali is found to give good results. After polishing, the resin may be washed with water or dipped in 1 per cent aqueous sulphuric acid.
