Abstract

[Class 140] [Also in Group XXIII] In pressing laminated plates, blocks, and the like formed of layers of wood, paper, vulcanized fibre and the like, the pressure, temperature, and moisture contents in the space surrounding the work-piece are regulated to avoid over-drying of the work. For this purpose, the press plates are connected by a yieldable jacket, the space within which is connected to means for supplying gaseous fluid at the desired temperature &c. Fig. 1 shows a jacket formed by a bellows d connecting the press plates a, b, and Fig. 2 shows a telescopic jacket formed by a frame i slidable against the action of springs i<1> in a grooved guide h. The gaseous fluid is supplied by a pipe f extending either through one of the press plates, as shown, or through the jacket. Condensed water is removed through a conduit g. A multiple-plate press with telescoping jackets is also shown. One or more sides of the jacket may be removable for charging the press. In a further form, the jacket comprises rigid walls with yieldable packing means around the top and bottom edges, the jacket serving to limit the stroke of the press.
