[Classes 31 (i), 42 (i), and 140] Articles are cut from laminated material consisting of two or more layers of which at least one contains a thermoplastic substance, by a heated cutting element which causes the thermoplastic substance to seal the cut edges. The'articles may be cut by a die 18 provided with an electric heater 21 and an ejector plunger 22 having a heater 25 whereby the layers of material may be pressed and joined together during cutting. The material preferably consists of three layers, of which the middle layer may be cellulose acetate in the form of a fabric ; the middle layer may, however, be a fabric, only part of which is cellulose acetate, or rubber latex, chlorinated rubber or vinyl resin. Plasticizers may be incorporated in the thermoplastic layer, and water or a solvent may be used. The surface layers may be a knitted, woven, felted, &c. fabric of linen, wool, silk, cotton or cellulose acetate, metal foil, leather or paper. Articles which may be formed include garter pads, suspender ends or strips, watch straps, collars, boot tongues, hat bands, tapes, belts and anchoring tabs for tent guy ropes. Tapes may be formed by drawing the material past fixed heated cutters.
