Abstract

476,830. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BENJAMIN, M., and JENKINS, R. O. Sept. 4, 1936, Nos. 24236 and 31823. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube or the like, in which an indirectly-heated cathode 6 of cylindrical form and having at one end a thermionically active surface 3, Fig. 1, is to be accurately located relatively to some face of a modulating electrode 1, the cathode is provided with a shoulder 7 which abuts against a washer 4 of insulating material, such as mica or steatite, so that a relatively small part 8 bearing the surface 3 projects into or through a hole in the washer, and the washer fits into a recess in the electrode 1 so that one of its faces abuts against the face of the electrode. The electrode 1 has an aperture 2 in which the emissive surface lies. In a modification, a narrow cathode has a projecting shoulder and is preferably introduced into the washer from above so that the shoulder engages the top face of the washer. In another form, shown in Fig. 3, the modulating electrode is divided into two parts 1 and 11 spaced a small distance apart and the cathode is supported from part 1 so that the plane of the emissive surface 3 lies between the two parts. Part 11 has an extension 12 reaching nearly to the anode 13. In practice, the modulation is applied to part 11, while a constant bias applied to part 1 enables the slope of the characteristics to be varied. Typical curves of this variation as shown. Dimensions and spacing of the electrodes are specified.
