476,676. Refrigerating. ANDREWS, H. I., and HERBERT, T. M. May 8, 1936, No. 13033. [Class 29] Absorption systems. -A reversing system having an evaporator 2, 2a of such large capacity that it is only partially emptied during each evaporation - absorption period is controlled by a thermostat 12 influenced by the cooling action of the evaporator so that when the temperature in the storage chamber 1 falls below that at which the goods are to be maintained a period of generation and condensation is initiated to replenish the evaporator. The apparatus is particularly applicable to railway vans, in which case the generator-absorber 7 is heated by steam supplied from a locomotive through a pipe 8 or by electricity supplied from an axle-driven dynamo. The thermostat 12 controls the steam valve 13 or a switch of the electric heater. Preferably the thermostat also initiates an evaporation period when the temperature of the storage space rises above that desired for the goods. In addition, a thermostat may be used to control a valve 24 between the condenser 5 and the evaporator to permit or interrupt evaporation when the heat supply is not available, as when the vehicle is uncoupled from the train, to conserve the store of refrigerant in the evaporator as much as possible. The heating periods may also be terminated by devices influenced by the temperature or pressure in the generator-absorber or in the condenser.
