476,261. Coating sweetmeats and pharmaceutical products. HOUNSELL (ENGINEERS), Ltd., J., HOUNSELL, W., and HOUNSELL, F. June 10, 1936, No. 16184. [Classes 28 (i) and 81 (i)] A machine for coating sweets and other edible or pharmaceutical products with sugar, flour, or like substances, comprises a rotatable drum 7 having a screw thread formed by an upstanding flange or wall 10 on the inside of the drum, and a mesh or small holes 12 in its wall near the delivery end through which the unused covering material can pass into a reverse screw passage or passages 15 formed on the outside of the drum, the material being thereby returned to the feed end of the drum where it is raised by longitudinal walls and falls through a grill or perforations 16 on to the sweets as they are admitted to the drum. The sweets are agitated during their passage through the drum by longitudinal ribs 11, integral with or attached to the drum, and having their steeper sides in the direction of rotation of the drum. The drum is provided at one end with a band 8 of friction material which rests upon belt-driven rollers 2, the other end of the drum resting upon freely mounted rollers 9. The delivery-shoot 14 and the feeding-shoot 20 are secured to the base 1 by lugs 21 engaging holes therein. The feed shoot 20 is formed with a circular plate 22 and a passage-way 24 down which fresh sugar passes from a feeding-device 25 provided with a hopper 26, closed by a lid 27, and a belt-driven shaft carrying paddles for agitating the sugar and moving it through a hole in a partition wall to an opening above the passageway 24. The feeding-device is so mounted that it may be swung to one side to permit the drum to be lifted from the rollers 2, 9. An inspection door 19 facilitates' cleaning of the passages 15. When the articles to be coated are wet and tend to moisten the sugar, the fresh sugar may be supplied on the feeding shoot to effect a preliminary coating before the sweets enter the drum.
