[Class 108 (iii)] Relates to a shock-absorber, particularly for aircraft undercarriages of the type comprising telescoping parts enclosing a liquid and a compressible medium, such as a spring or compressed air, one of the parts consisting of a piston or plunger c, Fig. 1, having a hollow rod b containing liquid and/or a compressible medium which is adapted to be further compressed when the shock-absorber is loaded, while the other part consists of a cylinder a in which the piston or plunger c is reciprocable. According to the invention a plurality of longitudinally-extending grooves e or slots are formed in the inner surface of the cylinder to permit passage of liquid from one side of the piston to the other. As shown in Fig. 1, movement of the piston on compression of the shock-absorber is also opposed by a spring d. Apertures f in the rod b permit flow of liquid into the rod due to the decrease in the internal capacity of the cylinder on entry of the rod. The cylinder grooves e may be dispensed with and a slotted liner k inserted in the cylinder a, as shown in Fig. 2. In this case the piston c moving with an outer cylinder i is slidable in the liner k while the cylinder a is slidable in the cylinder i and is formed with a guide-plunger o having channels p providing communication between the cylinder i and an annular space o<1> below the plunger o. Liners having various kinds and arrangements of slots are shown.
