Abstract
475,057. Convertible aircraft, road vehicles, and ships. PERRY, R. May 11, 1936, No. 13357. [Class 4] An aircraft adapted also to travel on land or water comprises means for transmitting the drive from the aero-engine through a common member to land wheels, a water propeller, or a rotary wing system. In one form, the airscrew is driven through a hydraulic clutch F from the engine E which drives a shaft 2 through the hydraulic clutch 1. A bevel gear 4 is slidable on splines 3 on the shaft 2 and may connect the drive to the rotary-wing system through a bevel wheel 4a and a hydraulic clutch 28. Two coaxial wing systems may be driven in opposite directions through bevel gears 26, 27, 24 and shafts 22, 23, The gear 4 carries a sleeve 6 provided with splines 8 adapted to co-operate, on forward movement of the gear 4, with splines 9 on a shaft 7 connected by splines 11 to a coupling 10 adapted to be moved simultaneously with the gear 4 to engage splines 14, 15 or 13, 17 so as to drive, respectively, the road wheels C through worm 19 or the water propeller B. Universal joints are provided in the driving shafts.
