Abstract
Wool is treated with chromyl chloride to reduce its tendency to felt. The chromyl chloride may be used in the form of vapour, or dissolved or dispersed in an inert organic solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or trichlorethylene. The wool may be treated as tops, skeins or cops; the use of organic solvents in the case of oily wool facilitates subsequent scouring. In examples: (1) air-dry scoured wool fabric is steeped for 1 hr. at 18 DEG C. in a 2 per cent solution by volume of chromyl chloride in carbon tetrachloride, hydroextracted, washed, neutralized with dilute ammonia, washed and dried; (2) loose wool is placed in a chamber, air evacuated and chromyl chloride vapour admitted and finished as in example 1. Specification 464,503 is referred to.
