Abstract

474,690. Directive wireless signalling. PLESSEY CO., Ltd., and BAILEY, C. E. G. May 21, 1936, No. 14428. [Class 40 (v)] In direction-finding, in order to prevent signals reflected by the ionosphere from obscuring the directional indication given by the direct wave, a cathode-ray indicator is used, and the receiving circuits are inhibited for a short period after the arrival of each direct impulse so as to remove or diminish the brightness of the trace formed on the fluorescent screen. As shown, a tuned circuit Z in the output circuit of the last H.F. stage V1 is paralleled by a diode V2, the load circuit of which includes a rectifier V3 and resistance R1 shunted by a condenser C2. A connection G applies the built-up voltage across C2 to the control-grid of a cathode-ray tube (not shown), the effect being to allow the direct impulse to form a trace, which is then deleted or diminished by the applied voltage before the reflected signal comes in. A leak resistance R2 then restores the circuit to normal. The circuit shown may be duplicated across a common diode which serves to render the control independent of the strength of the received signals.
