Abstract

474,568. Discharge valves. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. March 19, 1937, No. 8176. Convention date, March 20, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] In ionic rectifying tubes of the type in which at least one of the electrode supports, for example the support 7 of the anode 3 is protected by an insulating sleeve 9 one end of which projects into a cavity in the electrode and the other end projects into a tubular glass portion 11 of the envelope, a resilient buffer 8 is interposed between one end of the sleeve 9 and the adjoining part of the tube to avoid rupture by the clamping action or thermal expansion. Preferably the member 8 is a helical spring made of refractory metal such as tungsten or molybdenum. The protecting sleeve is made of steatite or magnesium oxide. The cathode supports 5, 6 and the anode support 7 are sealed into the envelope as described in Specification 196,231, [Class 39 (ii)]. The envelope has a gas filling such as argon at a pressure of 7 mm. of mercury and contains a small quantity of mercury 4 for maintaining the vapour pressure.
