Abstract

To carbonaceous fuels such as lignites, brown coals, semi-coke or coke, or to fuels to be coked is added a mixture of salts of manganese or similar metal with several degrees of oxidation and of one or more salts or bases of alkali or alkaline earth metals, the ratio of manganese &c. to the other metals being from 2-3 to 1 and preferably 2,35 to 2,4 to 1. One to two per cent may be added to the fuel together with wood-charcoal, powdered coke or other inert substance. For metallurgical use the fuel may contain manganese in the ratio of 1 : 2 of the alkali or alkaline earth metal so that the excess of manganese may act as a purifier or of 1 up to 3 of the other metal to obtain a more fusible slag. Lime, magnesia, dolomite may also be added or lime and silica with a small amount of fluorine for improving fusibility. If the materials are added before coking, bases or salts such as sodium or potassium carbonate are used instead of nitrates, which are otherwise preferred to chlorates.
