[Class 135] A safety cut-off device 1 for gas-consuming appliances comprises a tubular member 4 formed at its ends with seats for two separate valve members 8, 5 and intermediately with a branch conduit 17 leading to the pilot burner, an external operating member such as the pushbutton 9 by which the valve 8 may be moved to the closed or a partly closed position before the valve 5 is opened, and an electromagnet 6 which holds the valve 5 open when energized by current derived from the heating of a thermoelectric junction or the like by the pilot flame. As shown, the upper chamber 2 of the device is connected to a gas supply and the lower chamber 3 communicates with the gas appliance. The valve 5 has a closing spring 7 whilst the push-button is maintained in its lowest position by a spring 10. A rod 11 connected to the push-button is long enough to contact a pin 16 on the valve 5. The valve 8 is pressed against a collar on a sleeve 15 connected to the rod 11, by spring 14. A piston 13 also on the sleeve 15 moves in a dashpot cylinder 12 and so prevents the valve 8 opening quickly enough to extinguish the pilot flame by the suction. A restricting rib 18 prevents an undesired fall of pressure in the conduit 17.
