Abstract

A coating-composition for producing a dull or mat finish on fabrics, paper, films, or other flexible base material comprises cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate dispersed in a solvent or dispersion medium, a vegetable oil softener for the cellulose nitrate incompatible with the cellulose acetate and in amount not substantially exceeding that of the cellulose nitrate, a plasticizer for the cellulose acetate and optionally one or more additional softeners or plasticizers for the cellulose derivatives. The vegetable oil softener may be raw or blown castor oil, blown rapeseed oil, or blown cottonseed oil. The plasticizer for the cellulose acetate may be dibutyl tartrate or phthalate, diethyl tartrate, or diamyl tartrate. The solvent or dispersion medium may be acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or ethyl acetate. Diluents such as benzene, toluene, ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, or amyl alcohol may be added. The proportion of cellulose acetate to cellulose nitrate is preferably of the order 1 : 1. The composition may be applied over pigmented or unpigmented coatings. It may be applied to rough finished paper stocks, regenerated cellulose film, cellulose acetate or nitrate or celluloid sheet material, or natural or synthetic resin films. Fabrics may be coated with the composition and then used in the production of belts, flexible black-boards, pocket-books, handbags, and leather substitutes for book-binding.
