Abstract
473,376. Toys. FUCHS, K. July 20, 1936, No. 20018. [Class 132 (iii)] A toy vehicle, beetle, or mouse is provided with a bumper, feeler or head which on encountering an obstacle causes a steering wheel, which also acts as the driving wheel, to change or reverse the direction of travel of the toy. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the rear wheels 19 are loosely mounted on their axle, the front wheels only lightly touch the running surface and the steering or reversing wheel 1, which also acts as a driving wheel, is provided with a lateral toothed rim 14 meshing with a pinion 6 keyed on the vertical driving axle 13 driven by the spring motor 9. The steering wheel 1 is rotatably mounted on an axle 17 fixed in the oscillatable U-shaped carrier 2 carrying rigid bushes, supported by a bracket 11 and fixed on the spring motor 9 respectively, in which the axle 13 runs freely, and having fixed to it a pinion 5 meshing with a rack formed on one wall of a slot in the end of a push rod 4 carrying a bumper 3 having rollers 10. The steering wheel 1 is returned to normal straight-ahead position by a spring 7 mounted on a pin 8 on the push rod 4. The bumper 3 may be provided with a sharp edge 12 at one end to obtain quicker reversal when the toy encounters an obstacle. When the toy simulates a beetle or mouse, a slidable or oscillatable feeler or head may replace the bumper 3. The axle carrying the rear wheels 19 may be slightly inclined in order to obtain easy reversal of the vehicle on a small surface.
