Abstract
472,717. Electron multipliers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRY, D. W. Aug. 5, 1936, No. 21575. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (v)] A multiplier comprises a plurality of grids, each lying in the path of the electron stream from one cathode to the next and all connected to the same alternating modulating voltage which carries each of them through the same cycle of potential about its mean potential. Preferably, one such grid is associated with the cathode in every stage ; the cumulative effect of each grid on its saturated electron stream results in a large total effect. In the form shown, each cathode 1 has above it an accelerating electrode 4 connected to the next cathode, which, in association with a magnetic field, guides the electrons between the cathodes. A grid 6 is placed before each cathode and biassed slightly negatively by connection to a point on the potential divider 3 through a leak resistance 7. A modulating source 8 is connected to each grid through a capacity 9. The first cathode is photo-electric. In another form, the electrons pass in a zigzag fashion between the cathodes, on which they are focused electrostatically by cvlindrical extensions of the cathodes. A modulating grid is placed in each of the gaps left between the extensions. Additional magnetic focusing may be employed. The Provisional Specification describes an arrangement in which a bias resistance is connected in each cathode lead.
