Abstract

Chrome leather after tanning and before dyeing and fat liquoring is treated with a solution of an alkali-metal polyphosphate, i.e. a phosphate molecularly dehydrated to an extent equivalent to the removal of one or more molecules of water from an orthophosphate and including a mixture of ortho-, meta- and pyrophosphates. Soluble sodium metaphosphate is a suitable substance and also the acid and neutral pyrophosphates and the products obtained as described in Specification 378,345, [Group III]. For example, the tanned hides are washed and then treated in a solution of 10 pounds of sodium metaphosphate in 50 gallons of water. After washing the treated hides may be dyed in usual manner followed if desired by treatment with basic dyes. The hides are finally fat liquored.
