Abstract
In tool elements comprising a working edge of hard alloy welded on a supporting body or shank, the hard alloy consists of 50-70 per cent of tungsten or molybdenum or both, 2-6 per cent of carbon, 5-15 per cent of chromium, and more than 20 per cent of iron group metal, with or without up to a total of 6 per cent of titanium, zirconium, silicon, and boron, which may be added as such or as carbides. The melting point of the alloy may approach that of the supporting body within 100-300 DEG C. The alloy may be made by consolidating the constituents either by means of a binder or pressure or both and heating the product between low and high sintering temperatures. In some cases a mixture of the metals may be heated in a graphite crucible, the carbon to form the carbides being obtained from the crucible.
