Abstract
470,645. Loading &c. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and LATIMER, K. E. Feb. 18, 1936, No. 4955. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (iv)] Near end intermodulation effects in a twoway cable due to non-linear characteristics of the loading or dielectric material are reduced by using terminal portions of smaller non- linearity for a distance comparable with a wavelength for frequencies falling in the middle of a channel. In a particular case, the amplitude of intermodulation products arising in the type of cable used for a terminal portion may be half that arising in the main portion of the cable, but the near end intermodulation products of the combined cable show a much greater reduction. In a continuously loaded cable the terminal and main portions have the same inductance per unit length, but the magnetic properties of the loading of the terminal portions are different. In a coilloaded cable the coils have the same inductance throughout the cable, but those in the terminal portions have a lower hysteresis factor, e.g. ¢, due to different size or material of the core. Where the dielectric is the factor introducing the intermodulation effects, the capacity is uniform throughout the cable but the dielectric of the end portions has a lower non-linear distortion factor. The Specification contains a mathematical discussion of the problem.
