Abstract
470,479. Toy vehicles. MULLER, H. Feb. 12, 1936. No. 34426. Divided out of 470,465. [Class 132 (iii)] A clockwork toy vehicle is wound by means of a friction wheel adapted for rolling on the ground and connected with the clockwork and mounted on a shaft separate from that carrying the driving wheels, clutch members being provided which cut off the transmission of power from the spring shaft to the driving wheels during the winding operation. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, pressure on the toy body 1 in the direction of the arrow 53 causes the rear axles 14, 16 to move upwards in slots 42, 43 in the toy body 1, and the friction wheel 7 comes in contact with the ground 54 and can be rolled thereon to wind the spring 6. Whilst the body 1 is pressed down the shaft 10 journalled within a slot 55 provided in the elastic band or spring controlled clockwork frame 9, rotatably mounted on the spring shaft 4, is moved downwards so that the spur wheel 12 is disengaged from the pinion 13 and the rear axles 14 and 16 and the differential 17, 18 and 19 are uncoupled from the spring shaft 4. In a modified construction, Figs. 3 and 4, the clockwork frame consists of two parts 69. 70, pivoted together by a pin 90 and under the action of a spring 91, the drive from the spring 83 being to the front wheels 71, 72, and the friction wheel 7 being provided with a covering 85 of resilient material. After the spring 83 has run down the shaft 80 drops in the slot or slots 87 and disengages the spur wheel 79 from the pinion 78 so that the toy can be drawn along by a cord attached to the eyelet 93 or can be drawn or pushed by hand. In a further. modified construction the driving spring shaft is journalled in slots in the toy body and is pressed downwards at the ends to bring the friction wheel into contact with the ground. In a further modified construction, the friction wheel is brought into contact with the ground by pressure on the steering wheel. In a further modified construction, the rear wheels act as friction wheels and the drive is to the front wheels and in this construction only one rear wheel may be provided. Figs. 20 and 21 show a modified form of driving mechanism in which the stirrup member 129 of the differential gear is closed at 130 and provided with a counterweight or made longer than the part 129 weighted with the planet wheel 128 by which mass distribution the engagement of the spur wheel 122 with the pinion 123 is facilitated. In this construction the spur wheel 122 and pinion 121 are carried by a rocking lever 133 rotatably arranged on the shaft 4 and provided with projections 134 spacing the lever 133 from the spur wheel 8 and serving as a coupling therebetween. A spacing sleeve 136 may also be provided. Various constructions of rocking lever are described. Figs. 26 and 27 show a friction wheel 7 comprising two parts 176, 177 and a rubber ring 178. The part 176 carries projections 178 engaging between corresponding projections 181 of the part 177, the projections 181 being provided with tongues 182 passing through holes 183 in the part 176 and bent over.
