Abstract

470,348. Vehicle lamps; mounting reflectors and electric lamps in lanterns. MACINTYRE, N., PEILL, D. M., and FOOTE, A. Feb. 13, 1936, Nos. 4333 and 8750. [Classes 75 (ii) and 75 (iv)] In a vehicle lamp, a rotatable carrier 10 carries a pair of supplementary reflectors 11a, 12a each shaped to fill a central opening in and complete the curvilinear continuity of a main reflector B, separate light sources 11, 12 are carried by the supplementary reflectors in different relationships thereto so that two alternative beams of different character are obtainable, the carrier is rotatable alternately in reverse directions to change the supplementary reflector in use, and co-operating contacts in the lamp casing A and on the carrier 10 automatically make and break the circuit to the two light sources as the reflectors are brought into and out of operative position. The reflector 11a and/or the light source 11 may be amber-coloured or otherwise coloured, and the reflector 12a is colourless. The light source 11 is arranged so that the reflector 11a gives a diffused beam. Movement in one direction is transmitted from the Bowden cable 17 to the carrier by step-up gearing 18, 19, and a spring operates in the other direction. The electric contacts carried by the casing are spring-plungers which hold the carrier in position after rotation. In another form, the axis of rotation is inclined, and the carrier can be moved to a third position in which one of the auxiliary reflectors projects its beam to one side and downwardly. In another form, the main reflector B is also rotatable to one side as shown in Fig. 6. The auxiliary reflector 29 has a projection 55 which engages the reflector B so that the reflectors 29, B can be deflected together. The reflector B is carried by arcuate arms 53 movable in brackets 54. Alternatively, the reflector B may be guided by pin-and-slot or groove means. One of the supplementary reflectors may be formed of upper and lower half-paraboloids, the focus of the upper half being at the light source, and that of the lower half in front of the light source. The upper half of the lamp bulb may be blacked or hooded, or screened so as to reflect light onto the lower half of the reflector. The carrier may be moved by electromagnetic means.
