Abstract

470,240. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. March 5, 1937, No. 6533. Convention date, June 8, 1936. [Class 53] An accumulator having a zinc negative electrode is provided with an electrolyte consisting of an alkali which is partly neutralized by boric acid. Potassium hydroxide may be used and sufficient boric acid may be added to form a solution of potassium metaborate. The negative electrode may comprise a plate of porous iron or nickel or a nickel iron alloy, the pores of which are filled with zinc which may be mixed with cadmium. The zinc may be introduced into the porous plate by first filling the pores with a solution of zinc oxide in ammonia, evaporating the water and ammonia and electrolytically reducing the zinc hydrate left in the pores. A quantity of cadmium hydrate may be dissolved in the zinc oxide solution to cause cadmium to be mixed with the zinc. Instead of the zinc oxide solution a solution of a zinc salt may be used. The porous plate may be amalgamated with mercury before or after the deposition of the zinc. Alternatively, the negative plate may be formed with pockets into which are pressed pellets of spongy zinc or zinc dust mixed with mercury oxide. The positive electrode may consist of nickel hydrate.
