Abstract
In the production of a water-soluble product by thermal reaction between sulphuric acid and a titanium-bearing material, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a small amount of crystalline sulphate of titanium, which may be hydrated or anhydrous titanyl sulphate or the product of a previous operation. About 0,5 to 10 per cent by weight of sulphate relative to the TiO<2> content of the titanium-bearing material may be used, and the reaction mass be maintained in an agitated condition to the end of the reaction by the injection of air or other gases as described in Specification 288,569, [Class 1 (iii)]. Materials which may be treated include ilmenite, rutile, artificially prepared hydrated or dehydrated titanium dioxode, and rutile treated as described in Specification 408,215 to obtain an alkali metal titanate of the formula M2Ti5O11.
