Abstract
A synthetic resin is prepared by reacting a polybasic acid (with or without a proportion of a fatty acid) with a polyhydric alcohol (with or without a proportion of a monohydric alcohol), the total alcohol being insufficient to combine with the total acid, reacting the polyester resin produced with a compound containing an amino or amido group, and condensing the product with an aldehyde. The reaction of the polyester resin with the amino or amido compound may be carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst, e.g. hydrochloric or an organic acid, a basic catalyst such as ammonia or pyridine, or a salt catalyst such as zinc carbonate. A phenolic body may be added before the condensation with the aldehyde. The polyhydric alcohol may be a glycol, or a mono-ester of an alcohol having at least three hydroxyl groups with a fatty acid, e.g. a monoglyceride obtained from a drying oil, the polybasic acid may be a mono-ester of an acid having at least three carboxyl groups with a fatty alcohol, and the compound containing an amino or amido group may be a diamine or diamide or a urea compound. In examples, citric, adipic or sebacic acid is fused with ethylene-, triethylene-, or butyleneglycol, octadecanedi-ol, or glycerol to form an acid poly-ester compound which is fused with urea, the product being then reacted with an aldehyde, which reaction is effected by heating the aldehyde with the fused or dissolved product or with the pulverized solidified product. In these examples, part of the polybasic acid may be replaced by a fatty acid and part of the polyhydric alcohol by a fatty alcohol, e.g. an alcohol containing a double bond such as oleic alcohol; these substituents may be used in the form of monoglycerides of fatty acids and mono-fatty alcohol esters of polybasic acids such as citric or aconitic acids. The resins are compatible with cellulose derivatives such as nitro and acetyl cellulose and with the usual fillers, and may be worked up to moulding powders, casting compositions, and binders for coatings and lacquers. Specifications 316,144, [Class 2 (iii)], and 344,401 are referred to.
