469,853. Foundation garments. THORNTON, A. A. (Gossard Co., H. W.) June 12, 1936, No. 16431. [Class 141] [Also in Group IX] A foundation garment of the girdle, combination girdle and brassiere, or pantie girdle type, is made wholly or in part from a known two-way, stretch fabric, Figs. 8 and 9, comprising elastic threads 2 running in one direction, and inelastic threads 4 wrapped around the elastic threads, and extending from one to the other in staggered relation, the fabric being so arranged in the garment that the elastic threads run only in a horizontal direction. In one form, Fig. 6, the garment is provided with an inserted front panel 13 possessing only a vertical stretch, the directions of stretch of this panel, and of the remainder of the garment being indicated by arrows. In another form, Fig. 16, the garment is provided with an inserted stiffened front panel 22 which is made longer than the adjacent edges of the elastic portion of the garment when in unstretched condition, so that the garment will assume a smooth appearance on the body. In another modification, the front panel whether of inelastic material or of material possessing only a vertical stretch, is superimposed upon the material of the garment. In a further modification, the garment is provided with a superimposed front panel of two-way stretch material similar to that of the garment.
