Abstract
469,731. Electric discharge lamps provided with luminescent screens. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and RANDALL, J. T. Jan. 27, 1936, No. 2535. [Class 98 (i)] [Also in Group XL] A lamp filled with gas or vapour (e.g. a mixture of argon and mercury vapour) is combined with a luminescent medium consisting of a cadmium phosphate activated as with manganese so that it emits reddish luminescence, the lamp being caused to emit nearly white light by adjusting the proportion of the primary radiation of the mercury spectrum to the red radiation from the cadmium phosphate to maximum efficiency for example as described in Specification 460,890, [Group XL]. The screen may be exposed directly to the discharge or be separated from it by a solid transparent to short-wave radiation. The luminescent material is preferably prepared by precipitating the phosphate by reaction of ammonium phosphate with cadmium sulphate, adding 0À1 per cent of manganese in the form of chloride, drying and grinding the powder, and heating in the usual manner. In an alternative method, the phosphate is derived from a mixture of cadmium oxide and phosphoric acid. The material, after grinding and sieving if desired, may be attached to the support by phosphoric acid as binder, as described in Specification 460,756.
