Abstract
469,711. Universal joints. STEVENS, A. H. (United Engineering & Foundry Co.) Oct. 28, 1936, No. 29290. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint for a rolling-mill comprises a tongue 5 on one shaft-member 1, pivotally engaging the flat inner walls of a bronze segmental slipper 6, which engages rotatably in a transverse cylindrical boring 3 in the other shaft-member 2, in which boring it is retained by a helical rib 11 carried by either member 2, 6. engaging a complementary groove in the other. The slipper 6 can thus be screwed into position in the bore 3, and the slight transverse movements of the slipper 6, which occur as the joint deflects in operation, are of no consequence when the joint is used for the application referred to. The tongue 5 is located transversely in the slipper 6 by a pin 8a on the latter engaging a slot 9 in the tongue. The slipper may be made all in one piece, or, as shown, it may be split through the pin and held together by a bolt 13. The end-face of the pin 8a is then crowned, and the bolt includes a spring-washer 14, so as to allow a slight relative tilting of the slipperhalves to facilitate assembly and avoid breakage during operation.
