Abstract
469,596. Gas - blast switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. March 23, 1937, No. 8538. Convention date, March 23, 1936. [Class 38 (v)] In a switch having an arcextinguishing chamber 1 presenting inner walls of material, such as hard rubber, capable of yielding an arc-extinguishing gas due to the heat of the arc formed between a pair of cooperating relatively movable contacts, one of which 2 is fixed ' at or near the chamber-end whereas the other 4 is movable within the chamber, in order that both large and small currents may be interrupted, the contact 2 is enclosed on its side located remote from contact 4 by an auxiliary chamber 3, capable of being put into communication with chamber 1 and containing a piston 5 which is arranged so as to vary, in response to give variations of gas-pressure, the chamber-volume put into communication with chamber 1. The piston 5 is normally urged by spring 7 against contact 2, and when it returns after being displaced from that position, it drives a blast through the chamber 1 when contact 4 leaves the lower end thereof. An adjustable vent 8 controls the action of the switch.
