[Class 36] A cable comprises one or more conductors, each of which is enclosed in a flexible insulating sheath comprising a plurality of layers of graduated dielectric properties, each layer comprising an organic compound, the molecules of which are electrically symmetrical and containing no heterogeneous inclusions, the first layer being intimately united with the conductor and each succeeding layer being united with the preceding one in such a way that the resulting composite insulation forms a solid sheath without voids or gas pockets. The organic compound may be a polymerization or condensation product, may be aliphatic or cyclic, and may be a hydrocarbon or a derivative thereof : a large number of specific compounds is listed. The layer next the conductor may have the highest or lowest dielectric constant. Each conductor may be provided with a metal tape around the insulation and the cable may have an external sheath and steel armouring. Specification 1568/01, [Class 36], is referred to.
