Abstract

Filaments, fabrics, films, and the like of organic esters of cellulose are subjected to saponification in selected areas only, washed, and treated with a saponifying agent which under the conditions of the exposure intensifies the saponification of the already saponified areas without substantially saponifying the unsaponified areas. The preliminary saponification may comprise local treatment with aqueous caustic soda, caustic potash, barium hydroxide or the like, preferably under such conditions that no saponification occurs during application and then effecting the saponification by drying the materials under heat. Again, the treatment may be a bath treatment applied to materials which have been locally reserved by means of a resist. The extent of the preliminary saponification may be sufficient to remove from less than 10 per cent up to 20 per cent or more of the original acidyl content of the materials. The intensification of the saponification may be effected with weakly alkaline or weakly acid aqueous baths, e.g. of sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium borate, sodium phenate, ammonia, or nitrogenous organic bases, a number of which are specified. Examples are given of the preliminary saponification of cellulose acetate yarn in which (1) the yarn is printed at intervals with a solution of caustic soda and (2) the yarn is printed with a resist and then drawn through a bath of caustic soda and finally a scouring bath. The sensitized yarn, according to further examples, is treated with (3) a dilute solution containing soap and caustic soda, (4) a solution containing soap, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium acetate, and (5) a solution containing ammonia. In other examples, a cloth containing cellulose acetate yarn, viscose yarn and yarn treated as in (2) is immersed in (6) an aqueous solution of methylamine and (7) a solution containing soap and ethylene diamine. In a further example (8) cellulose acetate yarn treated as in (1) is doubled with cellulose acetate yarn and fabric woven therefrom is treated in a bath containing soap and cyclohexylamine. According to the Provisional Specification, filaments, fabrics, films and the like of organic esters of cellulose are saponified by a process in which the saponification is started by means of a mineral base and completed by means of a substance of considerably lower alkalinity than said base. Specifications 323,790, 332,263, 336,217, [all in Class 2 (ii)], 370,430, 371,461, 389,823, 423,168, 435,806, 435,987, 438,584, 438,586, 438,587, 438,655, 438,656, 453,302, and 463,955 are referred to.
