Abstract
469,014. Stiffeners for boots and shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and BANCROFT, W. H. Dec. 16, 1935, Nos. 34802/35 and 13886/36. [Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A measured mass of stiffening substance is delivered locally within the layers of a multilayer shoe-end stiffener and is subsequently worked by pressure over the desired area of the layers to impregnate one or more of the layers of the stiffener. The layers may, if desired, be anchored in proper position prior to applying the stiffening substance by spotting the lowest of the layers with a small quantity of the stiffening solution or with a similar solution to penetrate locally the several successively piled layers to anchor each in turn to the other. The stiffener may comprise a lower layer 54, Fig. 3, of material impermeable to the stiffening substance such as, where such substance is a cellulose derivative, grease-proof paper, a central layer 50 of swansdown or similar absorbent material for the stiffening substance, and a covering layer 52 of bibulous material such as filter paper. The layer 54 is intended to be torn off just prior to inserting the stiffener in the shoe and is provided, to facilitate this, with a projecting tab. The measured quantity of stiffening substance may be deposited centrally upon the layer 54 and the layers 50, 52 may then be superposed on this, in correct position, and pressure is then applied, e.g. by an operative to spread the substance over the desired area of the stiffener. A guard frame may be employed to delimit the spread of the substance. A device such as that shown in Fig. 1 may be employed to deliver the measured quantity of stiffening substance. It comprises a casing 10, adapted to be attached at 22 to a source of supply of the substance under pressure, and containing a plunger 12 movable by a handle 42 in a chamber 36 in the casing. Updrawal of the plunger first causes a supply of the substance to be cut off by the plunger head 12, which thereafter pushes upward a sleeve 30 against the pressure of a spring 26 until the upper entry to a transfer port 24 is opened and a charge is expelled to the under side of the plunger 12. The position of the sleeve 12 in the casing is adjustable by a screw sleeve and lock nuts 32, 34 to adjust the quantity of stiffening substance delivered at each downward operation of the plunger 12. An indicator 38 and indicia 40 indicate the amount of the charge. A measuring device such as described may be mounted in association with a container 83 for a supply of stiffening substance under pressure on a press. The layers of the stiffener are assembled in correct relation on a die member 60 by the aid of spring- pressed pins 62, the die being supported on a bracket 75 under the casing 10 of the measuring device. The cavity in the die 60 is shaped in accordance with the contours of the desired stiffened portion of the stiffener and the die is placed by means of a handle 69 between the pressing members 85, 86 of a press, the reciprocating head 87 of which is actuated by a toggle. The charge of stiffening substance is thereby pressed into the desired locality of the stiffener. The stiffening substance may be a celluloid solution with a high content of dissolved and suspended solids, or of a thermoplastic character. Specifications 28681/03, [Class 17], 143,310, [Class 17 (ii)], 163,909, [Class 17 (i)], 332,818, [Class 106 (v)], and 335,998, [Class 102 (ii)], are referred to.
