Abstract

468,794. Grinding. ASQUITH, Ltd., W., and BREARLEY, N. Jan. 17, 1936, No. 1498. [Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A motor-driven spindle unit for a grinding- machine is provided with two motors, one motor A, Fig. 1, for driving the spindle or spindles and effecting the feed, and the other motor B traversing the spindle head quickly towards or away from the work, the motor A being connected by gearing with the outer ring portion of a freewheel device of the spring- controlled roller type, Fig. 5, and the reversible quick-traverse motor B connected by projections g<2> with the inner portion of the freewheel device which is connected by gearing with the traverse mechanism. The motor A drives the spindle C through spur gears a, c, and motion is transmitted from the spindle through spiral gears c<1>, c<2> to a cross-shaft F, gearing f, l on the end of this shaft drives a worm wheel l<1> and internally threaded worm m operating on the stationary screw M for the slow feed. Coaxial with the shaft F is a short shaft G driven by belts from the reversible.motor B. The gearing c<1>, c<2> drives the sleeve E, Fig. 4, free on the shaft F, and for forward slow feed movements the sleeve E wedges the rollers J, Fig. 5, against the inner portion H which is keyed to and rotates the shaft F. Prongs g<2> integral with the shaft G<1> extend between the rollers J and recesses h<1> in the member H. On the direction of slow forward feed these prongs are driven around and the motor B with its current supply cut off is also driven idly. For rapid reverse the motor B is switched in and the prongs g<2> then disengage the rollers and the member H is driven at high speed in the reverse direction with the sleeve E idling. For rapid forward feed the motor B only is switched in and the prongs g<2> then engage the recesses h<1> to drive the member H.
