Abstract

468,744. Screws. CLAYTON, C. E. EVERY-. (Illinois Tool Works) Oct. 9, 1935, No. 7461/37. Divided out of 468,679. [Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a tapping - screw for use in metal, synthetic resin, &c. having threaded holding and hardened tapping portions, the latter being provided with a recess so as to form a cutting edge, the thread on the tapping portion decreases in external diameter and height towards the entering end of the screw but has the same cross - sectional contour as the thread on the holding portion. The screw having a head 1 has a holding portion 2 and a tapping portion 3, and the V-shaped thread 5 on the latter has the same pitch and section as thread 4 on the former, but is made of decreasing height and crosssectional area so as to expose a helical core 6 of gradually increasing width. The recess 7 forming the cutting edge 7a is of the kind described in Specification 468,679, and the screw is to be inserted in a hole having a diameter slightly greater than that of the core 6. The diameter of the core 6 is at least as great as the root diameter of the thread 4.
