Abstract
467,671. Bridges; floors ; metal structural units. TEMPLE, A. E. S., and HILL, H. V. Dec. 16, 1935, No. 34841. [Classes 20 (i), 20 (ii), and 20 (iv)] A floor, or constructional unit therefor, comprises metal top and bottom plates 11, 12 united at intervals by a system of plate web members 13, 14 which are disposed on intersecting lines, united together, and secured at their edges to the top and bottom plates so as to form a compound structure which is stiffened longitudinally and crosswise and is internally constrained against bending and shearing forces. In the unit shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the two members 13, 14, which are welded together and may be slotted so as to interengage, are secured to the bottom plate 11 by welding and to the top plate 12 by welding or screwing ; the connection to the top plate may also be by riveting over on to the top plate lugs which project from the upper edge of the webs through holes in the top plate. The web members may also be welded in slots in the plates 11, 12. The unit may also be formed by casting in one piece the webs 13, 14 and the top and bottom plates 11, 12. The top plate 12 of the unit may be cast in one piece with the webs, and the bottom plate 11 secured to the webs by welding, riveting, screwing or the like. The webs need not be of the same depth throughout and may be deeper at the centre of a unit which is used in a cambered bridge floor. The outermost joints of the units form a continuous seal against the passage of air and moisture. The webs need not be at right angles to each other, and a triple web system forming triangular cells may be provided. The units may be assembled edge to edge and united by bolting, welding, &c. to form a bridge floor which may be strengthened by attaching upright flange members to each side of the floor. To form the floor of a suspension bridge, the units 16, Fig. 5, are connected edge to edge and supported on transverse and longitudinal I-beam 17, 18, of which the beams 17 receive the suspension links of the bridge. For floors in aircraft, the units may be made of light alloys. Specifications 395,540 and 419,099 are referred to.
