Abstract

Coloured pigments, containing barium sulphate as the basic material, are prepared by precipitating barium ions by sulphate ions in the presence of colouring compounds of manganese or other heavy metal, at normal or slightly increased temperature, mixing the precipitate with a nitrate, and melting, sintering and calcining the mixture. A permanganate, manganate or manganite may be employed as the colouring compound, and it may be partly or entirely replaced by corresponding compounds of chromium, vanadium tungsten or molybdenum, by mixtures of such compounds, or by complex salts, such as the heteropolyphosphates or the heteropolysilicates, of these metals. Further variety of shades and colours can be obtained by the addition of such substances as the sulphates and nitrates of cerium, zinc, chromium and iron. According to examples: (1) mixed solutions of a manganate and of sodium sulphate are precipitated by barium ions, and the mixed precipitate of barium sulphate and barium manganate is washed and dried. It is then mixed with barium nitrate and heated, in stages, to 750 DEG C. The resultant mass is powdered and treated with dilute acid, yielding a rich blue pigment; (2) mixed sulphate and chromate ions are precipitated by barium ions, and the precipitate is mixed with barium nitrate and compressed into tablets which are heated, in stages, to 750 DEG C. The product is powdered, twice boiled with dilute hydrochloric acid, then treated with dilute sulphuric acid, washed and dried, yielding a stable green pigment. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 the manganese compound may be replaced by an iron compound, and the nitrate may be replaced by a nitrite. Further, the barium sulphate need not be precipitated in the presence of the colouring compound, but may be merely mixed therewith, prior to mixing with the nitrate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 444,110.
