Abstract
Tanning-agents are prepared by treating a synthetic tanning agent of the sulphonic acid condensation product type with colloidal silicic or stannic acid or a colloidal sparingly soluble metal salt thereof. The silicic or stannic acid may be introduced during the manufacture of a synthetic tanning-agent by adding an alkali silicate or stannate to neutralize an acid solution of the tanning agent. Soluble metal salts may be added to the tanning agent and the insoluble compounds of silicic of stannic acid produced by addition of soluble silicates or stannates. Examples: (1) A mixture of naphthalene sulphonic acid, dioxydiphenyl sulphone, formaldehyde and water is heated to boiling and neutralized with water glass and caustic soda; (2) A mixture of cresol sulphonic acid, formaldehyde and water is warmed and then neutralized with waterglass and caustic soda; (3) Cresol sulphonic acid is mixed with urea and caustic soda and there is added to the reaction mixture waterglass and formaldehyde, the mixture is boiled and acidified with oxalic or phosphoric acid ; (4) Cresol sulphonic is treated in a manner resembling that of example 3 but with the addition of aluminium sulphate, or another metal compound such as zinc or bismuth ; (5) A reaction product of cresol sulphonic acid, urea, caustic soda, formaldehyde and waterglass is treated with phosphoric acid, and the whole is evaporated and ground with oxalic acid; (6) A tanning-agent is prepared from cresol sulphonic acid, urea, formaldehyde, sodium stannate and caustic soda ; (7) A tanning-agent prepared from cresol sulphonic acid, urea, caustic soda and formaldehyde is mixed with phosphoric acid and the mixture diluted with colloidal silicic acid. Specification 276,014, [Class 76], is referred to.
