Abstract

465,247. Waiter - tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. (Babcock & Wilcox Co.) Sept. 16, 1936, No. 25256. [Class 123 (ii)] In a waste-heat boiler or like heat-exchanger, horizontal rows of U-tubes 12 extending from the ends of a casing are so arranged that the return bends of the tubes extending from one end cross the vertically adjacent legs of the tubes extending from the other end. The gases flow from the inlet 7 to the outlet 8 over a vertical baffle 11 between the tubes. The tubes are supported in sheets 45 detachably secured to the framework. The free ends of the tubes are supported by studs secured to the return bends and resting on the legs of adjacent tubes. The tubes are connected in series through header boxes 14 which, when the apparatus is used for generating steam, are connected to a steam and water drum 16 by riser tubes 24 and downcomers 18. Separately operated dampers 66 over apertures at the bottom of the baffle 11 control the direct flow of hot gases from the inlet to the outlet.
