Abstract
464,705. Knitting-machines. BLACKBURN & SONS, Ltd., G., START, H. W., and START, E. Nov. 29, 1935, No. 33097. [Class 74 (ii)] A straight-bar machine for knitting a course at an intermediate point in a garment comprises a needle bar with butted needles, a hand-operated cam box on which is mounted a thread carrier, bits on which the courses are drawn and knitted, a presser bar which can be moved away from the needles, and a detachable bar with transfer points. Needles A have butts engaged by a cam D sliding on rods E, and operated by a handle D2. The cam box carries a bar J which holds all the needles up when the box is at the right of the machine, to facilitate running-on. A presser-bar K is mounted on spring held bell-crank levers L, L<2>. carrying a bar G, with raised parts G<1> at each end engaged by a roller G<2> on the cam box D, so that the pressure is retracted at each end of a traverse. The bits P are mounted on a rod P carried by arms Q on a spring-held shaft Q<1> mounted in the ends of links R on a shaft S which is operated by a lever T<1> to raise the bits. Movement of the bits P between the needles is controlled by cams D <6>, D<7>, bearing on the shaft Q<1>, and operated by the swinging to right or left of the cam-handle D<2>, which is mounted on a pivot for this purpose. In operation, a garment placed in a shield Y is run on to the needles, the cam is traversed to the left to knit a course, the front part of the garment is turned back, the needles are raised, a bar V<1> carrying transfer points V is placed in position in brackets W, and the bits P are raised to transfer the loops to the points V, for removal to another machine.
