Abstract

The fibres used in the production of rubber bonded products which have been compressed either moderately to give such products as upholstery pads or more strongly to give felt are subjected to a pretreatment before impregnation. The fibres, which may be animal or vegetable, e.g. pig's or cow's or curled hair, feathers, coconut fibre, Algerian grass, wood flock, straw, seaweed, hay, are twisted into a loose rope which is then treated with steam or boiling water containing ammonia and perhaps keratin. Or the fibres may be treated with an ammoniacal solution of keratin, agar-agar or albumen, then twisted into a rope and treated as above or with steam not containing ammonia. The loose rope is then opened out and impregnated with rubber solution or latex which may contain water glass, gelatine, albumen or agar-agar. Cork or wood dust may be mixed with the fibres before or after impregnation. The moulded product may be reinforced by means of strips of fabric arranged in the mould or a core of cork granules or shavings and may be covered with wood or textile sheets.
